Sometimes, I have the feeling that if we would search in the dictionary for the word bath or thermal water, Hungary would be marked there.
When visiting Budapest, it is almost an inevitable and obligatory program to visit one of the spas. And for those who have a stressful lifestyle – and who is not stressful these days – I would prescribe Budapest’s spas.
For this, I highly recommend the Király Bath, which, thanks to its history, welcomes its visitors in an unusual atmosphere.
The history of the Király Bath
Király bath is located in the District II of Budapest, and its history dates back to Turkish times. With this, it earned the title of the only spa that has been in operation since the Turkish occupation of Buda.
Its construction was begun in 1565 by Arslan Buda Pasha, and it was completed by his successor, Szokoli Mustafa. Its water supply is still provided by the hot wells near the St. Luke’s Bath, as it has been done since then.
The spa was located within the city walls during the occupation, so during the siege, it was still possible to take a little bathing to relieve stress. In the past, water was channeled through a larch canal to the spa unit, and nowadays the water comes through a much more modern pipeline.
In 1796, both the building and the area became the property of the König family, so it is not difficult to infer where the name “King” comes from. (The Király means king in Hungarian.)
They redesigned the building to its present form: their aim was to blend the old with the new, leaving the Turkish atmosphere of the spa. During World War II, the Király’s Bath suffered a great deal of damage and eventually had to wait until 1950 to be renovated.
For whom is the thermal bath of the Király Bath recommended?
When you go to a thermal bath, the primary reason is obviously the healing effect of the water. Each thermal water has a different effect, but in addition, only their stress-relieving effect is worth a mass, already in terms of health.
The water in the Király’s Thermal Bath has calcium-magnesium bicarbonate and sulfate-chloride; it also contains significant amounts of fluoride ions.

This II Districts Spa Complex can attract the attention of visitors already from outside. Like we were really on a time travel. It reflects the atmosphere of the 1500s Turkish bath with all its oriental motifs.
It was one of the first Turkish baths in Hungary, during the rule of the Ottoman troops.
But let’s see exactly what this spa has to offer.
There is a 26 degrees Celsius submersible pool, three thermal pools, one of which is 32 degrees Celsius, another is 36 degrees Celsius, and for those who are very cold, there is a 40 degrees Celsius thermal pool too.
Beyond that, we can use a 32-36 degrees Celsius Jacuzzi, which can accommodate up to 5 people at a time.
In addition to the water experience, there is always something to do; sauna, steam room, and hot air cabin, in the spa.
And if we like a little more extreme things, I can confidently say an outdoor hot tub, especially on a cold winter day is a great experience. However, if the weather permits, we can relax and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in the outdoor sunbathing garden.
As for the healing department, there are many services to choose from, all of which will have a positive effect on our physical condition.
For example, there is a bathtub: it is especially recommended for patients who have some form of skin disease, may have urinary problems, or have severe cardiovascular problems. The treatment takes place in a tub filled with medicinal water and it may be an appropriate option for those who, for whatever reason, cannot use the pool.
