Do you want to hide from the world? Would you try something new? Could do a joint vacation? Hungary is teeming with more and more romantic places, be it barren, bustling, or close to nature.
I have collected the 5 cities close to my heart, where it is certain that one can romance and immerse oneself in the other without any problems. The possibilities are given; the rest is up to you.
And if Hungary weren’t enough, here are the 10 most romantic small towns in Europe. 😉
1. Szentendre – Romance less than half an hour from Budapest
This city is not far from Budapest, yet it is like another world. Its winding streets, cobbled little roads show the image of a small Mediterranean town, but by no means will I compare it to anything else, as it is so unique.
It shows a different face in every season: in winter it is a bit extinct, not only the streets but also the restaurants, it really starts to get busy in the spring.
Do you want to get to know the sights and attractions of Szentendre better? Read my article about Szentendre.
However, if you do not want to hustle and bustle, but want to have a romantic walk with your sweetheart on the banks of the Danube, then the winter and autumn months are for you. In this case, it is only you and the quiet nature that also has its own charm.
In the spring, Szentendre is getting full of life and people, so we can look at the city from a completely new perspective, in which romance can also be found. There are few more beautiful panoramas in the city than from the Serbian cross in Szamárhegy, where the Danube and the city center meet, thus giving a unique picture.
If we have admired this with our better half, we should head to the oldest church in Szentendre, from here we also have an amazing view: from this angle, we can admire the city’s famous terracotta-colored roofs.
From here, it’s worth exploring the little hidden streets together, where you can always find something eye-catching, be it a rose bush or a hidden flight of stairs for a little immersion.
The reason why I still like to go on a date in Szentendre is the Danube bank and the restaurants lined up here. Not just because I love my belly, but because almost every cuisine in the world is represented here.
Be it Italian, Greek, Serbian, Thai or of course Hungarian, you can find something delicious here. If, on the other hand, you do not want the hustle and bustle of the Danube promenade, nature awaits you.
You could take a not so little walk along the Bükkös stream, all the way to the Iron Bridge (Vashíd), which is just as wildly romantic that it can still be romantic.
But what could be a better place for a couple in love than a forest and the soft embrace of nature? In Szentendre, this is also possible. It doesn’t really matter when you come here and which face you want to enjoy in the city, because romance is simply coded into Szentendre that’s all.
You could arrive on two wheels, by train, by car, or even by boat. I might recommend the last one mainly, as breaking the foams on the Danube, admiring the landscape and the water can create an even more loving atmosphere.

2. Eger – Get into a romantic atmosphere in the historic city
This city is one of the dearest places in my heart. You can only fall in love here.
Eger is just as bustling and multicultural as it is calm and authentic. It was like it had been weighed on a pharmacy scale to meet as many needs as possible.
We can wander the historic little streets while exploring the sights of the city, and of course there are many restaurants, cafes and good wines of Eger. What could be more romantic than sitting in a good Eger wine bar for a bull’s blood and staring at the stars, the city, and each other?
We have known since the famous Hungarian novel, The Stars of Eger, that this city is of paramount importance not only because of the struggles against the Turks, but also because it has a real love story.
The two main characters of the novel, Gergely Bornemissza, and Éva Cecey, also took eternal fidelity to each other under the open sky, without any kind of ceremony, which was so ingrained in me that Eger has been equal to romance for me ever since.
Read my article on the history and best sights of Eger.
There are a couple of venues that are especially worth visiting if you want to get a little more in the mood in the city. One such example is the Minaret, which, if we look at it in the evening while lighting up the 40-meter tower in bluish colors, will have a very mystical atmosphere.
Between the ruined walls in the small streets or if we are lucky and there is room on the bench among the other lovers, it is a good date place to snuggle up. I think the best thing about exploring a city is the little hidden treasures and little things, such as Kossuth Lajos Street, which serves as a small quiet island for the visitors. During the day, you can bring the delicacies from the confectionery not far away to eat together, and in the evening it serves with a little intimacy, of course only within legal limits.
Then let’s not forget about the Dr. Dezső Agyagási Spa, which shows its more romantic face, especially in the evening. There is everything here that can add to the mood of love: fountain, bridge, and waterfall. And if you also want to relax during your love weekend, I recommend the Turkish bath, which refreshes and relaxes at the same time.
Every couple in love can sometimes relax and pamper themselves, which can be a shared bath, sauna, or a good little couple massage.
Of course, the Castle is a must-see in Eger, but not only because of its historical value, but also because the panorama from here is amazing, you can literally see the whole city and the surrounding area. And if it’s a neighborhood, it’s okay to move out of the city and explore the no less wonderful countryside together.
The Valley of Szépasszony is a must-see if you both love not only each other but also the wine, not to mention the breathtaking natural features.
My personal favorite is Egerszalók, where I spent romantic long weekends several times. This tiny little place has such an aura that as you arrive, your nerves will smooth out: head for the healing water or a good little hike, this place is sure to make you feel much better.
3. Nagymaros and Visegrád – Two charming small towns in the Danube Bend
If it’s romance, we certainly won’t go wrong if we choose Nagymaros or Visegrád. The main attraction of the cities on the two banks of the Danube is the wonderful panorama.

Nagymaros
As we arrive in this small settlement on the banks of the Danube, we are sure to get into a romantic mood right away. The whole thing is no bigger than a handkerchief, but still the old houses, the small cobbled streets attract romance.
I also got to know Nagymaros better on a date meant for such a romance, when I managed to get lost, but I didn’t mind for a minute. It was good to walk together, discover the place, the little things that make the settlement so cozy.
Plus, that’s how I found my favorite patisserie ever since, which we came across completely by accident. The little patisserie, named Édeske, exudes a real atmosphere of the past century, in peacetime: both its furniture and the design of the whole have preserved the former light of a place with a great past.
The cookies are divine, the service is kind and I spent one of the most romantic couples of hours of my life here, so we have been visiting this place every year ever since if we want to be together a little bit. As the good weather comes, you can sit out in the garden, which is no less cozy.
Going further, you should not miss the Danube shore, where it is good to look at the water and the Visegrád Castle just opposite of you. Here, be sure to eat in the local hake hut, at least while you wait for the harbor to cross to Visegrád on the other side of the Danube.
It’s worth connecting these two settlements with a big tour: let me tell you something, it can test your relationship, but if you endure and come out of the woods together, you’ll survive anything. I say from experience. This breathtaking environment has such an effect on everyone that it puts you in a romantic mood without question.
Whether you spend just a few hours or a couple of days in the area, you came home more in love than ever before.
Visegrád
I also recommend a little walk on the streets of Visegrád before you fight your way up to the castle: it is worth visiting the Don Vito Pizzeria here.
There’s a real 30s mafia vibe, so if you want to get away from reality, this place will be great for that too. And the pizzas, they are divine.
You could also go to the castle by car, but I also recommend that you take a walk here as part of a small tour, the wonderful view and the proximity of nature will have a good effect on everyone.
An exhibition awaits you in the Citadel, you can learn about the history of the building, and a little by the end you might feel like a king and queen too, at least in each other’s eyes.

If you walk further up the road from the castle, you will have the opportunity for a super small program. Try the Visegrád bobsleigh track, where you can slide down in one bob together.
4. Keszthely- Where both counts and princes fell in love
This city has always been close to my heart as I have spent countless summers here in my youth. The proximity of Lake Balaton alone helps to create a romantic atmosphere, since no matter what season we visit here, a walk on the shores of Lake Balaton is an eternal place for a date.
It is not bias that speaks to me when I say that Keszthely has a different, unique atmosphere compared to the other settlements on Lake Balaton.
The renewed city is both modern and old, with all its charms. Of course, no one should miss a romantic walk in the Festetics castle and its park, where the loves were once woven one after the other between counts and other nobles, possibly even between maids too.
In my comprehensive article, you can get to know the best sights in and around Keszthely
One of my favorite love stories can also be attributed to a Festetics, Taszilo, who has become a true romantic story with Mary Victoria Hamilton, Duke of Monaco. There was everything: forbidden lovers, denial, divorce, and finally the well-deserved happy ending.
For many years, they lived in a happy marriage within the walls of the castle, and then, as a symbol of his love, the count also had a mausoleum built for his wife. This can be seen in the downtown cemetery, which has since been renovated, no longer scary, if the crypts don’t disturb you.
But there are still plenty of loves here, the muse of one of the most famous Hungarian poets, Sándor Petőfi, Júlia Szendrey, also grew up here and dreamed of it, maybe that Sándor will take her away one day.
When I was a teenager, the most popular dating spot was the Helikon Park. No wonder there are a lot of benches, lots of plants, you can hide for a little romance from prying eyes, and the venue is beautiful.
If you’re a sufficiently athletic couple, I also recommend that you ride a bit in the Fenyvesállé. The sight is breathtaking, and a common survival tour always brings people together.
If you want a more relaxed program that includes delicious food and drinks, head to the main square. There is also a restaurant and a patisserie. Our haunt has always been a place called Ánizs when it comes to romance, where the atmosphere is good, the people are nice and the wines are delicious.
Going back to the city’s sights, Festetics Castle, I would also mention the Palm House and the Bird House, these too can be good dating tips and last but not least, good experiences.
I can still imagine a few better things than grabbing a bottle of good Badacsony wine, some delicacy, and sitting on a blanket on the shore of Lake Balaton – watching the sunset, the soothing water, and the boats rocking on it: concise romance itself.
Of course, it is also worth exploring the area together, it is full of more and more beautiful excursion places. One of my favorites is where I was able to watch the sunset for hours with the current One, on St. Michael’s Hill (Szent Mihály domb) on Vonyarcvashegy. Here, we have a breathtaking view of Lake Balaton and the surrounding area, which we can admire while sitting on a small bench.
You can’t even scratch off the romantic marker from Keszthely, visit this wonderful city at any time, in every corner of which you will find something that will make you feel even more in love.
5. Szeged – Sun City
It is not a coincidence why Szeged is called Sun City, as it receives the most sunlight in Hungary, more than 2100 hours/year.
The Southern Great Plain region has no reason to be ashamed when it comes to romance: Szeged is one of the favorite destinations of lovers. Well, not only because it is a university town, and the relationships of many young lovers have leaped or just ended here, but also because there are so many wonderful sights here.
You should read my article about the history and sights of Szeged.
Walking in the city, sit down for a coffee or a cake, and in the evening taste the Szeged fisherman soup is a must-do program for all lovers.
And you may not have thought about it, but there is also a Bridge of Sighs in this city, even if it is not like the original. This small bridge between two buildings can be seen in Széchenyi Square between the Town Hall and Bérpalota.
Its name is not surrounded by any romance, as it was given that name when it was the place, which gave the possibility to get to the tax office through it. Regardless, it’s a very nice sight, and if two lovers visit it, the whole thing already gets a much more romantic meaning.
And if you are dating, you can probably go as far as possible with the beautiful nature, so it is worth going to the Szeged Herb Garden (Fűvészkert) and mostly at the beginning of August, when the lotuses are blooming. If it weren’t a good and romantic program to walk among the beautiful flowers and in nature, even programs await you. The Far Eastern atmosphere swings around the herb garden: do you need more than that?
Szeged is a real pulsating university town and the center of the Great Plain region, so I recommend it specifically to couples who are constantly on the move. Here you can explore the city together, relax together in the Dom Square, eat good food, drink, and cultivate, as there is almost always a program here.
Be it a concert, theater, exhibition; if you want to live these experiences together, you will love Szeged. Of course, there is also nature, which gives plenty of opportunities for romance. The White Lake of Szeged (Fehértó) is one such place that I would like to highlight: It is located in the Kiskunság National Park and is the largest saline lake in the country.
If we come here during the migration period, we can encounter many species of birds, which gives the whole place an even more special atmosphere. And, of course, it would be a shame to miss the Szeged Zoo. What softens a girl’s heart more than cute animals? Well, right.
The most romantic Hungarian cities – Summary
Hungary is full of more and more beautiful and romantic cities, places, hidden or just bustling wonders. It is up to you to decide what type of romance you want and choose a destination accordingly.
Be it a bustling big city like Szeged or Eger, maybe a city of tranquil secluded beauty like Szentendre or Visegrád. For those who value the waterfront and many attractions, the perfect choice is the charming city on the shores of Lake Balaton: Keszthely.
